Dwarkamai

The humble mosque where Sai Baba spent much of His life, welcoming people of every religion, caste and background with love and compassion. Dwarkamai holds a special place in the life of Shri Sai Baba. It was the humble mosque where Baba spent a large part of His life in Shirdi. People came to Him there with their worries, prayers, illnesses and difficulties. Baba welcomed everyone without asking about their religion, caste or social position.

During Baba’s lifetime, the place was generally referred to simply as the masjid, or mosque. The name Dwarkamai became widely used after Baba’s passing. According to the official Shree Saibaba Sansthan Trust account, Baba connected the mosque with Dwarka when a devotee expressed a wish to visit the holy city of Dwarka. Baba told him that there was no need to go elsewhere because that very mosque was Dwarka.

From an Old Mosque to Baba’s Home

When Sai Baba returned to Shirdi, He first stayed in different places, including under the Neem tree at what is now known as Gurusthan. Later, He moved into an abandoned mosque.

This simple building gradually became the centre of Baba’s daily life.

It was here that Baba met devotees, spoke with people, accepted their offerings, gave them Udi and guided them through their difficulties. He did not create a place separated from ordinary life. Instead, the mosque became a place where people could come freely and sit in His presence.Baba’s life in Dwarkamai reflected the simplicity that marked His entire way of living.

A Home Open to Everyone

One of the most important things about Dwarkamai was that everyone was welcome.People from different religions and communities came to Baba. The official Shirdi Sansthan history notes that Baba’s mosque was open not only to people of different castes but also to those who were considered outside the caste system.

This was closely connected with Baba’s teaching:

“Sabka Malik Ek” – God is One.

For Baba, religious differences were not a reason for people to separate themselves from one another. His life brought together people from different backgrounds and showed them a path based on faith, patience, love and mutual respect.

The Sacred Dhuni – The Fire That Still Burns

One of the most important features of Dwarkamai is the Dhuni — the sacred fire associated with Sai Baba.Baba kept a Dhuni burning throughout His stay. The fire became an important part of His daily life, and its sacred ash came to be known as Udi.The Dhuni is still maintained today. The official Shree Saibaba Sansthan Trust describes it as a perpetually burning sacred fire that Baba Himself established.

Baba regularly gave Udi to devotees who came to Him.Udi was taken from the Dhuni and given as a blessing. Devotees regarded it as a reminder of Baba’s grace and protection. Stories preserved in Sai literature describe devotees receiving Udi during times of illness and difficulty.

The deeper meaning associated with Udi was also connected with the temporary nature of worldly things. Everything with a name and form eventually returns to dust. Thus, Udi was not only something devotees received from Baba; it also reminded them of detachment, humility and the impermanence of worldly life. The practice of collecting and distributing Udi continues at Shirdi today.

Baba’s Simple Life in Dwarkamai

Baba did not live like a wealthy or powerful person. He wore a simple robe, lived in the mosque and maintained a life of great simplicity. He spent time with ordinary people and accepted whatever was offered to Him.Dwarkamai therefore became much more than a physical building.

For devotees, it became a place where they could sit near Baba, speak to Him, seek His guidance and experience His presence. The official Sansthan describes Dwarkamai as the place where Baba spent most of His time during His lifetime.

A Place of Faith and Service

People did not come to Dwarkamai only for material needs.

Some came seeking healing.
Some came with family problems.
Some came for blessings.
Some came searching for spiritual guidance.

Baba responded to people according to their needs, often teaching through simple words, actions and examples rather than formal sermons. His central message remained one of faith, patience, love and surrender to God.

This is why Dwarkamai became closely associated with Baba’s work of helping people and guiding them towards a life of devotion and compassion.

The Heart of Sai Baba’s Shirdi

Dwarkamai witnessed many ordinary moments of Baba’s life — His conversations with devotees, His daily routines, His Dhuni, His distribution of Udi and His acts of compassion.Baba also maintained particular routines throughout His life. The official Sansthan account records that once He established a practice, He often continued it faithfully for years.

Even after His Mahasamadhi in 1918, Dwarkamai continued to remain one of the most important places connected with His life.Today, devotees visiting Shirdi continue to visit Dwarkamai along with the Samadhi Mandir, Gurusthan and Chavadi.

What Dwarkamai Teaches Us

Dwarkamai is remembered not simply because Sai Baba lived there, but because of how He lived there. It reminds devotees that:

  • God is one, regardless of religion.
  • Everyone deserves love and respect.
  • Faith should be accompanied by patience.
  • Service to others is an important part of devotion.
  • Material possessions are temporary.
  • A simple life can have a deep spiritual meaning.
  • A place of worship should welcome everyone.

For generations of devotees, Dwarkamai has remained a symbol of Sai Baba’s love, equality and compassion. Dwarkamai was a simple place, but Baba’s presence made it extraordinary.

The old mosque became a home for people who came seeking hope, guidance and blessings. Its Dhuni continues to burn, and its Udi continues to be received by devotees as a sacred reminder of Sai Baba. Dwarkamai remains one of the places where the story of Sai Baba can still be felt most deeply.
